With this in mind, it is not surprising that research in being conducted in some colleges towards better drugs for dogs, not just humans. Aside from this, more courses are being introduced like animal and public health or food safety for dogs as many see a rising trend in the care of pets. The plan is to incorporate technology into the treatment of dogs and other pets so that it becomes more precise and effective.The scare the world got from recent bugs like the bird flu and mad cow’s disease was a wake-up call for researchers. It shows how vulnerable we are to viruses spread from animals to human. Considering that the dog is the top pet choice throughout the world, it makes sense then that researchers would like to see better preventive and maintenance treatments for dogs.

At the same time, scientists have a theory that treatment for animal disease could lead to new treatment for human diseases. Point in fact was the bacteria in cows that caused spontaneous abortion which infected humans as well with a flu-like sickness. An Infectious Disease Research Facility is being constructed in the US with a budget of $10.5 million. The National Institutes of Health has begun to prioritize applications for grants on research pertaining to veterinary and medical programs.

When Senator Ted Kennedy died, his death was caused by a brain tumor. This type of tumor also occurs in dogs. If research could help find a cure for dogs, it could also be used eventually for humans through something like regenerative treatment.

However, it was a national crisis when news about baby kangaroo skin being used to make football boots screamed from national dailies. As a matter of fact, it is estimated that almost 4 million kangaroos are decapitated every year to make shoes.  Kangaroo boot leather is known to be pliable and softer than cow leather. They are also more reliable under any weather condition even if synthetic leather can do just as well.

David Beckham voluntarily stopped using these types of boots in 2006 but many have not followed suit. The government has begun to regulate the slaughter of kangaroos and use of its leather but has not stopped anyone from making athletes’ shoes out this type leather. The practice is not endangering kangaroos since the demand for these boots are not very high.

Other animals only found in Australia are the wallabies and koalas. There are also the furseals, dingo, Tasmanian Devil, Bottle-nosed dolphin, numbat, platypus, salt water crocodile, and a lot more. Unique are pouched animals which do not necessarily mean something similar to that of the kangaroo. Some of the pouches are just a flap of skin over other skin and cannot be used for transporting babies or food.
